Troubleshooting

What to check when something doesn’t look or behave the way you expect. Click a problem to open it.

Nothing happens

I move a slider and nothing changes
  • The footage hasn’t been approved yet. If the viewer shows RIGHTS APPROVAL REQUIRED, open the Rights Certification section and click Open legal notice. Until you approve the footage, FaceTweak leaves the clip untouched. See Licensing and consent.
  • FaceTweak can’t find a face on this frame. Faces that are very small, turned to profile, deeply shadowed or partly covered may not be found. Try a frame where the face is clearer.
  • It’s looking in the wrong place. Check that Face to Adjust is set to the right person, and that Detection Crop isn’t hiding the face. Turn on Show Face Detectable Region to see what’s being ignored.
  • Something is turned all the way down. Check Mix in the Output section, and Pose Mix, Eyes Mix and Mouth Mix in Fine-Tuning. They should be at 1.
  • A mask is excluding that area. If Mask is set to Custom Regions, the feature you’re changing needs to be on Edit. See Masking.
  • You’re looking at a temporal feature. Smoothing and close-up detail appear a moment after you stop dragging, not during the drag.
The rights notice didn't appear by itself

Open it yourself: in the Rights Certification section, click Open legal notice. The notice opens automatically for footage stored on your own computer’s drives. For footage on a network drive or server, opening it manually is the way to approve it.

My render stops with a no-face error

No Face in the Output section is set to Fail Render, and a frame without a findable face was reached. Set it to Pass Through to leave those frames unchanged, or use Detection Crop and Face to Adjust to help FaceTweak keep track of the face.

It doesn’t look right

The face flickers, shimmers or wobbles when the shot plays

Each frame is redrawn on its own, and small differences between frames show up in motion. The Temporal controls fix this; start with Smoothing over time. If the expression holds still while the edit shimmers, use the Keyframe Stabilizer.

Things near the face bend: glasses, a hand, a microphone, hair

FaceTweak gently reshapes the pixels around the face so the change blends in, and anything close to the face moves with it. Use Masking to limit the change to the parts that need it, and Protect for areas that must stay put. For an object in front of the face, use a window or Magic Mask on Resolve’s Color page to put the original object back over the result.

The face smears or distorts
  • The change is too big. Large head turns, very wide mouths and extreme values ask the AI to invent a lot. Reduce the amount, or lower Mix.
  • The face is turned well away from the camera. Faces close to profile are the hardest case. Smaller changes work best there.
  • FaceTweak lost track of the face for a frame or two. Try Temporal Consistency, or check whether something covered the face on those frames.
FaceTweak changes the wrong person, or switches between people

FaceTweak ranks faces by size, so if two people change size during the shot, the ranking can swap. Set Face to Adjust to the right person, and use Detection Crop to fence off the part of the frame they’re in.

On a close-up, the texture looks noisy, painted or seems to crawl

See the step-by-step approach in Close-ups and 4K. In short: raise UHD Detail Temporal Denoise, lower UHD Detail Reprojection Blend, or try Warp Source Only for the eyes or mouth.

The face is slightly different in colour or contrast from the rest of the picture

Check Input Encoding in the Output section and set it to match your project. On the Color page, make sure FaceTweak sits after any log conversion and before strong looks.

There's a green tint or red shading in my render

A visual guide was left on. Green comes from Show Mask Overlay in the Masking section; red comes from Show Face Detectable Region in Face Detection. Turn them off and render again.

The changed parts look too sharp on a moving face

Turn on Motion Blur in the Temporal section so FaceTweak’s additions carry the same blur as your footage.

Speed

Playback or rendering is slow
  • The first frame is always slower, while FaceTweak loads its AI models. That can take several seconds.
  • Temporal and close-up features look at several frames at once. Finish your slider changes first and turn them on last.
  • Use Resolve’s render cache (Playback › Render Cache) so finished frames are kept for playback.
  • On Windows without an NVIDIA graphics card, FaceTweak runs on the main processor, which can take a second or more per frame. Check that Inference Backend is set to Auto.
  • If sliders feel sluggish, set Preview Policy to Maximum Responsiveness.

Trial and license

There are diagonal stripes over my picture

That’s the trial. When you buy, paste your license key into the License section and click Activate License. The stripes disappear without reinstalling. See Licensing and consent.

I want to move FaceTweak to a new computer

One license covers two computers at a time, in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro (once released). On the old computer, open the License section and click Deactivate This Machine, then activate on the new one. If the old computer is no longer available, click Manage License to see the computers your license is activated on, or contact support.

Still stuck?

Visit Support to report a problem. Include your operating system, your version of Resolve and FaceTweak, your graphics card, and the steps that cause the problem. Leave out your license key and anything private in your footage.
